Members and Friends of Austin Mennonite Church

I pray you are consoled by the pervasive presence of God in the world around
you.

Next Sunday in Trinity Sunday. No where in the Christian scriptures does
the description of a 'Triune' God appear. This manner of expressing the
divine character of God as it has been experienced by humans has become a
central teaching because of its capacity to distinguish the representations
of the power which creates and sustains all of creation. It is impossible
for us to appreciate how the first disciples struggled to understand the
person of Jesus. Having been immersed in the recognition that there was one
God alone, their gradual designation of Jesus as 'divine' demonstrates a
huge religious leap for them. This seems to have happened because no other
categories known to them were able to portray their knowledge of how Jesus
had lived among them. A similar distinction more easily was made for the
enduring presence of God with us which we refer to the 'Holy' spirit.
Sometimes this method of speaking about the mystery of the Creator causes
more confusion than support for the maturing church. Perhaps there is
another way of understanding God's pervasive presence in the creation that
will be more helpful for enabling our diverse world to live together in
peace. These thoughts will compose the sermon for next Sunday, 'Wisdom as
revelation of mystery.'

May it go well with you. Sincerely,

Garland Robertson
