Members and Friends of Austin Mennonite Church I trust you are encouraged as you continue on the journey of faith. Jesus brings to conclusion his discussion about how life would look if persons held in focus the ancient call for relationships to be fashioned by justice, mercy, and respect. Any one of these removed from the others promotes a legalistic formula which subverts God's intention for how we relate to each other. Jesus combines these three criteria under a discipline that causes us to love all persons without regard for how they respond to us. All the examples that Jesus has given us in the first portion of the sermon are intended to illustrate how this orientation applies in the practical everyday life of a disciple. Finally Jesus appeals to the character of God, directing us to let divine behavior be our standard. Is this an appropriate or an absurd measure for us? How does Jesus envision that we could 'be perfect as God is perfect?' .What was Jesus thinking? These thoughts will compose the sermon for this next Sunday, 'Conclusion: Demand for perfection.' May it go well with you. Sincerely, Garland Robertson ...always hold firmly to the thought that each one of us can do something to bring some portion of misery to an end
