Members and Friends of Austin Mennonite Church

I pray you are encouraged as you experience the gift of life.

Divine engagement is obviously at work in the preservation of the collection of Old Testament books represented as the declarations of prophets. No doubt many other observations about the current state of the community and predictions about happenings in the future existed, yet these are the ones that survive. The persons who spoke these lines are peculiar people. They have the capacity to look beyond the immediate situation and recognize a more substantial definition of life as it is influenced by both history and future. To us the prophets seem detached from reality. Rather than letting the facts speak for themselves they insist on speaking for the facts. They produce explanations that are totally illogical and unsubstantiated, and fantastic forecasts of upcoming events occurring years, even centuries beyond their time. Jesus is one of these starry eyed characters, looking at immediate discouraging events and forecasting the beginning of a new way of living, even a new world in which to live. Perhaps we can find a way to perceive this amazing world of the prophets, not only to see the kingdom of God already nearby but also to enter into it.

These thoughts will compose the sermon for this next Sunday, 'Finding the entry point.'

May it go well with you. Sincerely,
Garland Robertson
