MCC is preparing major aid response for displaced Sudanese
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is preparing $6.1 million Cdn./$4.6
million U.S. in aid for victims of violence in Sudan. Much of the aid will go
to the Darfur region, where more than a million people have been displaced in a
major humanitarian crisis.

A violent conflict in Darfur has killed an estimated 50,000 civilians and
driven more than a million others from their homes, according to the United
Nations. An MCC assessment team found thousands of displaced people in
desperate conditions when it visited four makeshift camps in Darfur in late
July.

"There were thousands of new arrivals who had really rough, rudimentary
shelter - totally inadequate," said Willie Reimer, the team leader, after
visiting Kalma, a camp of about 84,000 near Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.

Whole villages have fled attacks by the Janjaweed militias in recent
months, making a long journey on foot to what they hope are safer locations.
Many arrive bearing physical scars from the attacks and have lost friends and
family.

"People come into these camps really desperate, with basically nothing,"
Reimer said. Food is limited to half-rations of cereal at best, and
malnutrition is a threat in coming weeks.

      Donations
Donations to help displaced people in Sudan should be made out to MCC and
marked "Sudan Emergency Assistance."

In the United States, send checks to MCC at PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501,
or call (888) 563-4676.

In Canada, send checks to MCC at 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9,
or call (888) 622-6337. MCC is also in need of relief kits, blankets and other
supplies to replenish those being shipped.

      Darfur response details
MCC is appealing to its constituents for financial contributions of
$709,800 Cdn./$532,350 U.S. Additionally, MCC is asking for donations of school
kits (6,830) and blankets (100,000), (totaling $734,967 Cdn./$551,225 U.S.), or
the money to buy them. It plans to provide the following aid to displaced
people in Darfur:

        a.. 100,000 medium-weight blankets ($666,667 Cdn./$500,000 U.S.)

        b.. 1,110 durable shelters ($199,800 Cdn./$149,850 U.S.)
($175 Cdn/$135 U.S. to purchase local materials to build one house.)

        c.. 2,300 survival packages purchased locally ($199,333 Cdn./$149,500
U.S.)
(Package contents- 2 cooking pots, 2 plates, washing basin, water jerry
can, bucket, 5 pieces washing soap, 5 mosquito nets, clothes and 2 blankets)

        d.. 6,830 school kits ($68,300 Cdn./$51,225 U.S.)

        e.. Trauma training for school teachers ($6,667 Cdn./$5,000 U.S.)

        f.. 4,500 metric tons of sorghum ($4,511,279 Cdn./$3,383,459 U.S.)
through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank
Reimer and two other MCC workers, Harold Miller and Rob Haarsager, flew
to Nyala July 25 and met with leaders of the Sudan Council of Churches, which
has begun relief work in Darfur. Reimer is MCC's director of food, disaster and
material resources. Miller is a Sudan co-representative, and Haarsager will
soon begin a term in that position.

One of the people they spoke with in Kalma, a woman named Isha, was
mourning her husband and seven children who had been killed by the Janjaweed.
Only her young adult son Hassan was still with her.

Later on July 25, the team visited another camp near Nyala with about
32,000 people. The next day, heavy rain and reports of violence prevented the
team from leaving Nyala. They were told the harsh weather destroyed many
shelters in the camps.

The team traveled north on July 27 to two camps with a combined
population of about 17,000 near the village of Mershing. In the first camp the
Sudan Council of Churches had built an eight-classroom school and 50 basic
homes.

Muhammad Abu Zeid, the school's headmaster, said the community was
attacked twice by Janjaweed militias before everyone decided to leave their
village. In the first attack, in January, Abu Zeid's father was killed. His
mother was killed in the second attack, in March.

Reimer said the teachers he met at the school were energetic and very
motivated to care for their roughly 750 students, many of whom are traumatized.

"Teachers reported that children were absent-minded and terribly
sensitive to sound," Reimer said. "Whenever they were asked to draw pictures,
they drew a man with a gun on a horse."

"Janjaweed," as the attacking militias are known, is a colloquial Arabic
term for a gunman on horseback.

Through the Sudan Council of Churches, the assessment team also found a
need for aid for people displaced by a separate conflict near the city of
Malakal, in central Sudan.

      Aid for Malakal
Through the Sudan Council of Churches, the assessment team also found a
need for aid for people displaced by a separate conflict near the city of
Malakal, in central Sudan.

MCC is planning to provide 1,000 survival kits, worth $133,333
Cdn./$100,000 U.S., and a shipment of blankets to help displaced people near
Malakal.

      Aid to refugees in Chad
MCC is already shipping milk powder and other relief supplies for 1,000
refugees from Darfur in Chad, as well as for 500 refugees from a separate
conflict in the Central African Republic who are also in Chad. The total cost
of the shipment is about $173,000 Cdn./$130,000 U.S.

I received this e-mail from Oxfam- a group that provides humanitarian relief
and promotes fair trade. I was thankful to be able to do something about this
terrible situation and thought some of you might be feeling the same way.

      Judith,

As you probably know, a terrible humanitarian crisis
      continues
to unfold in Sudan and Chad. Over a million people
      have been
displaced. Most of them are living precariously in
      makeshift
camps. It's a dire situation that's likely to get
      worse.

But you can do your part to help. Please tell your
representative and your senators that saving lives
      in Sudan will
require US leadership. Ask them to appropriate more
      funds for
relief work in Sudan and Chad.

Oxfam -- in conjunction with other humanitarian
      organizations --
has been working to bring aid to these desperate
      people. But
      continued fighting, harsh weather, logistical
      challenges, and a
lack of funding have combined to seriously hamper
      relief
      efforts.

The US has already contributed financial and
      material resources
to this emergency. The UN, however, estimates that
      an additional
$274 million will be needed over the next four
      months -- just
to meet the most urgent humanitarian needs, and
      prevent
thousands more from dying in this crisis. Resources
      are also
needed to improve security for those in the camps,
      and the
relief workers trying to help them.

Please take a moment to email your representative
      and your
senators. Ask them to provide at least an additional
      $90
million in humanitarian assistance (the US share of
      the
projected total need), as well as material support
      and financial
      resources to improve security.

Thank you so much for your help!
