Whenever I've had trouble nearer the cone, I start checking for something
for it to snag on or not feed easily because of....a chip at the top of the
spool, the little "bumps" some companies use to hold the thread in place during
winding, a label at the top coming loose. And when I've let thread sit a
LONG time before I start the spool (on rayon), sometimes the outer layers are a
little more touchy.
