Back in the late sixties, early seventies we used to call them work shirts and embroidered them by hand. AH the pleasures of youth! Also, chambray yarn is dyed before it is woven (the colored warp comment). Chambray is a type of shirt in a Simon and Garfunkel song. :) Mary Mary Buckle Shuffletown Embroidery Charlotte, NC 704-398-1273 -----Original Message----- From: amayausers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:amayausers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Edna Khalifeh Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 4:23 PM To: amayausers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [amayausers] Re: definition of chambray Well, you're familiar with oxford, right? The fabric they make men's oxford shirts of? It has a slightly nubby texture. Chambray looks like oxford but is smooth, no texture. Don't often see it at the chain fabric stores, but you never know. There was a book with swatches in it of different fabrics, but I can't remember where I saw it. I would love to make (or buy!!!) a book with definitions and real samples. Anyone know of such a thing? I guess I could go to the fabric store..... Looks like denim but lighter weight. Originally all cotton, today it may be a synthetic or a blend. Wears and launders well. Uses: shirts, sportswear, and children's clothes. Off the top of my head, which is a ways off the ground so the air is thin up here...I seem to think that chambrey is a finer quality or smoother denim material? But it would be great to know what it really is for someone that asks.
