Near as I can tell the thread coasters are to help support the small
spools of thread on the posts. I, like you, looked for the REAL answer
and this is all I could figure.

(by the way, what are the thread coasters for? It doesn't tell us in
anything we've been able to find, and the thread seems to be just fine
without them. They're listed as a part to purchase, so I'm assuming they
