Thanks!!

I tried to figure that out on my own, but your explanation cleared it right up for me!

I just learned how to change the MT 'in' the design 'while' it is sewing,
and it was easy-Jeff and several others here gave me great hints.
In design shop, I make sure that I have 'color change' between any 'parts'
that will be going on a seam, or over another sewn area (which means
thicker/denser material under that needle!)
If lettering goes across a seam, then in 'properties' put a 'color change'
on either side of the lettering that will end up on the seam (or on top of
other sewn areas). You DON'T create a 'new' color-it can still be the same
color. But this 'color change command' allows you to change the speed,
stitch, material thickness, etc. for EACH separate 'color change' in the
image!
When you open the design up in Amaya, go to 'settings' and check on
'settings by color' and you can 'open' EACH individual 'needle' (color
change) and then increase or decrease speed, change the MT (material
thickness) and a whole bunch of other things I haven't figured out yet.
But it means that when the image is sewing (for example, a problem I had
with lettering really 'puckering' going over the seam of a hat) I was able
to change ONLY the letters 'on' the seam to a higher MT so that the thread
wasn't pulling so tight, and slowed the speed down to stop the thread breaks
there. Same as using metallic thread-I can have the Amaya slow down and
change MT, etc. ONLY on the spots where I use the metallic-as soon as it
goes to the 'next' 'color change'-even if it is the same color and needle-it
will go to the next 'settings' and keep going.
Its much easier than having to sit and watch the machine and quickly change
speed and MT 'as it sews'. Machine does it by itself-and you can change it
for every sewout if needed. Just go back into 'settings' and change it for
different fabric, whatever as needed.
