I remember a review of surge protectors in a computer mag a few years ago. They showed a whole series of pictures of lightning strikes jumping across the relatively small space of on/off switches, including those of the surge protectors. Their conclusion was that unplugging was the only sure prevention against damage from nearby lightning strikes. If lightening is going to strike your building, it doesn't really matter if your machine is on or off. The JOLT of lightening will shoot through anything that is connected with a wire or metal. Including clocks, coffee makers, PC's, etc... A surge of electricity would hopefully ONLY trip a "surge protector" and not jump across it. If you have issues in your area with more than average lightening storms and the like, I would unplug my machine when not in use and choose not to run the machine during storms. I line conditioner is a good idea handle occasional fluctuations in the electricity.
