I am not a tech but in my experience, the "straight ahead" needle placement 
works best for a perfectly timed machine. 

On the other hand if a machine is even just slightly out of time, then a slight 
twist to the right is a better choice.

In our case, the needles are installed with a slight twist to the right and 
that is the way the machine likes it.
