I use short stitches on when doing small lettering. That way the open areas
inside the letter "a" for example does not get closed due to the number of
stitches that form the letter. Short stitches on alternates the length of the
stitches so you do no close the open area or put so many stitches in one area
that it actually creates a hole in the fabric.
