Thank you, it makes perfect sense.  However, I did try moving those boxes and 
didn't see any changes in the gap.  
The graphic is about 6 inches wide, should I move the entry to the opposite 
side from the exit point?

Try to change the start and stop points (drag the little in and out arrows to a 
different location)
I have a feeling that the underlay isn't tacking down the sweatshirt material 
in the middle
and as it sew down it pushes excess material in front of it and then as it 
jumps down and
sews up it pushes excess material towards the middle where it meets the 
existing stitches
and has no where to go leaving a gap that my guess would say maybe sticks up a 
bit?

if you change the exit and entry points it will sew in a different order and 
direction and maybe you can get around that
try starting and stopping at opposite sides of each other.
