I used to advertise in all the weekly 'flea' papers, did trade-out ads for
radio spots, sponsored anything that came through the door (race cars, teams,
etc.) and never saw anything come of it-just MORE people coming through with
their hands out!
Started a new policy 5 years ago...if we DON'T get our name in the 'thank you'
ad placed by any group we helped out-they are cut off immediately. If any
'non-profit' group we donated to doesn't at least give us a courtesy call and
ask about our price on something they are going to ORDER and pay for from
someone else, they get CUT OFF...immediately. NO further donations or deals.
Period!
All of a sudden, our competitors-that were CHARGING them for their work-got hit
up for donations and freebies-and they wouldn't do it! NOW we get the calls for
'our price' on everything-and we GET the orders-and THEN donate somethinge
else. Word spread fast...we had been the ONLY shop donating stuff but everyone
else 'got the business'.
Our best source of orders-I arranged with the local chamber of commerce to PAY
for their monthly newsletter mailings-as long as I could have them include a
flyer, brochure, even a sample item (pen, keychain, even small catalogs from
our ad specialty suppliers! They get non=profit reduced mailing rates-and now
they don't have to worry about the cost of mailings and they love it! Costs me
anywhere from $125 to $200 each mailing-if I give them something more than a
letter size to mail. Goes to over 800 'active' businesses and business people.
Orders were slow at first but now I can count on a couple orders a month from
other businesses that have known me for years...but kept 'forgetting' that I
did shirts, or engraving, or embroidery, etc.
$150 to join the chamber-that's it!
