Kip and John,
I too am home based, but have done well as a member of the local Chamber of
Commerce. We meet once a month at the local Damons Resturant and have a
monthly Business After Hours event. A lot of networking goes on at both these
events and as a result, just this month I have done several jackets for the
local radio station; briefcases for a bank; blankets with the embroidable flap
for a local realtor. Also from this I have done jobs for holiday gifts like
personalized afgans (from Pure Country) and plush throws with things like
wedding dates with the newlyweds names, local high school mascots, newborns
date of birth and name. I give away gift certificates at local charity events
for personalized fleece blankets and I usually get more orders as a result. I
only advertize in a local shoppers guide that is direct mailed into area homes.
It only costs me $100 for a half page ad and I push my personalized line of
gift items. It works well and doesn't cost that much. I pass out
business cards EVERYWHERE I go and keep flyers at local businesses that will
allow it. I do a couple holiday craft show that I know are well attended and
have had lots of special orders and on site sales from this. All this works
for me, but I know it's probably not for everyone. HTH
