Dear Chugach Park Fund Supporters:
This year marks a major milestone for Chugach State Park -- its 50th
anniversary!
Thanks to your continuing support, the Chugach Park Fund is financing the start
of a major trail improvement project -- the rerouting of the Little O’Malley
Peak Trail to access the Ball Field.
The Fund is raising $50,000 of the estimated $100,000 cost of the trail
improvements.
If you’ve hiked out of Glen Alps, you’ve seen the growing scar from numerous
social routes up and down the “O’Malley Gully.” You might have left young
family members behind when you scrambled up or down that route, figuring the
slippery mud or gravel was not for little feet. The new trail (schematic is
attached) will use lower angle switchbacks to gain elevation, and be built with
a more sustainable surface -- good for park resources, safety and visitor
enjoyment.
This is one of the park’s most-used trails, and we hope you will support the
Fund’s work in making improvements. The Chugach Park Fund is working with
Chugach State Park, Alaska Trails and other organizations this spring and
summer to host multiple volunteer work days (up to 14). The sign up schedule
will be on the Alaska Trails website and we will let you know when that's
available. The first opportunity may coincide with National Trails Day, June 6.
Of course, we don’t know how the Coronavirus may change schedules but we will
be mindful of everyone’s health and safety as the top priority.
We’ll seek material and logistic donations to make volunteer and paid crew
hours most productive. And, we’ll use your cash donations to fund purchases
that will bring the Little O’Malley Peak Trail to modern standards. This money
will build on a major donation to the project from the Rasmusson Foundation.
Our expectation is that the second half of the project will be funded through
continued donations, non profit grants, as well as state and federal grants in
2021.
Also on the work schedule for spring 2020 is the installation of a new
interpretive sign at the Flattop Sunnyside Trail, a $2,000 Chugach Park Fund
project from 2019.
Chugach Park Fund has been able to support park improvements over the past
three years thanks to scores of donations large and small. If you’re a
continuing donor, thank you. If the Chugach Park Fund is new to you, we
encourage you to help support the trails and facilities that will keep Chugach
State Park a premier destination for the next 50 years.
