When I asked the National Archivist if the Treaty of Paris was still in force
and effect, this is what she had to say: With regard to the
U.S./Great Britain Definite Treaty of Peace ("Treaty of Paris'') signed on
September 3, 1783 and entered into force on May 12, 1784, only Article 1 is
still in force. Based on the Department of States Treaties in Force, 2020 via
the following link
https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/TIF-2020-Full-website-view.pdf ;
it appears Under "United Kingdom", "Peace", page 470.
Article 1 states: "His Britannic Majesty acknowledges the said United States,
viz, New-Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,
Connecticut, North Carolina, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland,
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, to be free Sovereign and
independent States, that he treats with them as such, and for himself, His
Heirs and Successors, relinquishes all Claims to the Government, Propriety and
Territorial rights of the same and every Part thereof."
