Accessible tourism inIndia. Braille signage is being installed at 50 monuments
but ideally"along with Braille signboards, miniatures of monuments should also
beplaced somewhere so that the blind can touch and feel them. Also Braille
mapand audio device should be be provided to the blind tourists".

"PracticalGeography for the blind" (1937) is filled with practical suggestions
forteaching blind students to make their own maps. They observe that this
activitysparks students' interest in maps and geography.
It also gives instructions on how a teacher can create atactile world globe by
applying textures and materials to a standard printglobe.

Here's a mystery.Outside Windsor Castle, I saw this sign with an embossed
drawing and raisedtext, and braille. I took a photo as we were rushed and I
thought I would readit later. Interestingly, the braille is not duplicated on
the sign and I can'tget a translation in English. Transcription of the braille:
it says "quinquennalissuis libere conubium santet adlaudabilis catelli,
quinquennalis agricolaeagnascor pompeii, etiam fiducias fermentet augustus"
I'd be interested in your thoughts.
Comments:
· Interesting.I have a friend who knows Latin, I'll ask her....
o Some of the words translate, but it doesn'tmake sense to me. "That was...
liberated... marriage... is praiseworthy. That was farmers... born in addition
to 'Pompeii'... Even assurances..."???
· I wonder if the sign maker got their signs mixed up whenadding the
Braille and accidentally put the wrong Braille on the wrong sign?
o Maybe... It doesn't seem to be relevant atall. Even if it was, there's no
reference to it elsewhere on the sign.
· Send an email to the outdoor trust?
· The lorem ipsum of braille signage? Great find! But notvery useful for
braille readers.
o Exactly. Might send an email to theappropriate authorities asking them what
the idea is. Bet they have no ideawhat's on their sign.
· yep, can confirm from my Latin-scholarfriend, it's basically nonsense,
"Lorem ipsum" type placeholder text. She says "Wow. Wonder what happened here.
No, no relation to anything onthe sign.
This is fakeLatin; there are standard chunks of fake Latin that are used by
typographers todisplay type or show mock-ups of books or sample designs. This
seems to be oneof those standard chunks. If you put the text into google you'll
see someexamples.
I wonder if someone put this braille text here as part of a design proposal
andthen forgot to put in the actual text, or whether it was done as some kind
ofjoke--a rather questionable one, if so!"
o That's appalling really...
