accessible-iOS google maps won't talk to me.

hi, i just can't seem to get google maps to talk to me! why is this? do i
have to download voices for it or something? i can see all of the directions
using voiceover when i press the navigate button. but the thing just won't
talk to me!
where have i gone wrong?
