You can use groups. For instance, you might have a group for "family", "work", and so forth. I'm not sure how to put contacts into groups in iOS - I usually just use my Mac to do any sorting, but Google should be able to tell you more. You can't nest groups like you can folders, but you can put one contact in multiple groups if you wish. The contact is not copied, so modifying it in one group will modify it in all groups, as far as I know.
