Chris: in sound settings, all I see is "ringer and alerts volume". Is there
another one I'm missing?

Ricardo, I just set two test alarms, the first with the phone not in the dock
and the second in it. Both worked perfectly... Go figure. Either it will start
working now that one alarm has gone off, or the issue is with repeating alarms.
I'll see what happens tomorrow morning. Thanks.
