Well, the Audible app is great, but as you correctly state: The
Audible app only works for Audible books that one has purchased from
them. I want an app that works similar to the Audible app only it
will download (or import) books from one's network or Dropbox or it's
own import facility. In other words, I want something that would
function similar to my VRStream whereby I copy a folder containing mp3
files for an audiobook to my iPod. I want the app to play those files
contiguously and remember my place when I stop the playback. Hope this
makes sense.
I want to avoid iTunes because it's an extreme pain in the ass.

Try audible the only issue it may be for you is that only the books
you get threw them will work.
You can't add books.
This isn't directed twoards you but i don't get why people try to
avoid itunes its a very good media player and completely accessible.
