Hi William, I'm not using an Android phone, but I do have a Nexus 7 tablet running Android. Form me, when I want to check the battery status, I touch the screen in the upper right corner. It gives me a variety of information, such as the WIFI and cellular signal strength, the status of any updates, notifications of new email messages, and, the battery level. Not sure if this is the same on an Android phone, but worth a try.
