Hi,
In normal circumstances, wireless settings (especially connection to
the Internet and security) are handled by the router, not the
operating system. What Windows allows you to do is access the router's
settings via a special website or the address of the router (typically
192.168.1.1). So you set the settings from the router such as network
name and security, and tell Windows to connect to your computer by
configuring these settings from Network setup Wizard. So think of the
router as the host and Windows being the client that connects to the
Internet via the router.
If I understood your situation right, I think the problem is caused by
either: loss of connection to the Internet (ISP's networks) through
the router, wireless interference (especially with some Bluetooth
devices) or other connection factors, not a dispute between XP and the
router over who should be the "boss" i.e. manage the settings. Hope
this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph
