I believe there was a review in the AFB magazine AccessWorld. Most things are accessible, but some things like borrowing books may not be. The best accessible experience to my understanding at this time is on the iPhone.

Hello,
If you are going to get one make sure and get the Kindle fire HDX. It is
the one that is accessible. If you go to www.serotalk.com you can find
a review of it there.

Hi list

I want to know if any of you have ever used the Kindle Fire, and if so, is it accessible to set up as well as use without sighted assistance? I have contacted the Amazon.com tech support personnel, and received the following email, which I have placed below. I am considering purchasing one so that I can purchase and borrow books, and as I understand it, you can only lend and borrow e-books via a Kindle device not a computer.

I have recently purchased an Amazon prime membership, and I want to use the various features of it. :) I have sent various bits of feedback to Amazon.com, and they seem willing to work along with the Blind and visually impaired.

Well any further info and assistance you can provide me with this matter will be much appreciated.

God bless and have a great weekend!

Alvin

Hello,

I understand that you want a Kindle that can be used by blind users. I'll certainly help you with this.

I'd like to inform you that with Voice Guide / Screen Reader and Explore by Touch on Kindle Fire, you'll hear spoken feedback about the items you touch and open, and you'll need to use special gestures to navigate the device.

This functionality is available on following devices:

Kindle Fire 2nd Generation
Kindle Fire HD 7"
Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
Kindle Fire HD
Kindle Fire HDX
Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Kindle.

Best regards,
Raju K

Thank you so very much Rupesh K for your quick, informative, and encouraging reply. :) Do you all have an accessible Kindle device that a totally blind user like myself can use?
How much would it be?
I may look into purchasing one in the near future. :)

God bless and thanks again.

Alvin

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Amazon Kindle services.

Kindly note Prime book borrowing feature is only available for Kindle device. This feature is currently not available for other devices like Kindle for Mac, Android or iDevices.

To successfully borrow a Kindle book under the Kindle Owners' Lending Library you need to borrow directly from your Kindle device and not from your computer.

To compensate your inconvenience, I've issued a $10.00 promotional certificate to your Amazon.com account, which will automatically apply the next time you order an eligible item sold and shipped by Amazon.com.

Please be assured that we're continuously working hard to improve your Kindle experience. I have forwarded your feedback to the Kindle Development Team and they will carefully look into the implementing of this feature soon on other devices too.

As with all of our products, we continue to make Kindle and Kindle apps better for customers with regular software updates.

As soon as your request becomes available, we will definitely let you know about this through our website.

Customer feedback like yours helps us continue to improve the service we provide, and we're glad you took time to write to us.

Again, thank you so much for your feedback and we're always glad to help you if you need anything.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Best regards,
Rupesh K

I'm Alvin, a totally blind user of Amazon.com, and I use the Kindle app for reading Ebooks. I want to borrow a kindle book I found on your website, but I couldn't find the link, button, or option for doing so on the site. Could you give me a step by step explanation for doing this.
I would really appreciate it. :)

Also, I ran across something called the Kindle Cloud Reader for the first time on the website as a choice for my device downloads for my ebooks. Is it accessible, and how does it work?

Thank you in advance!

God bless!
