I had problems installing Microsoft Security Essentials on a few computers
where there should have been no challenge. I checked with Google and found
the information below.

I have inserted the necessary links in text through out this article if
anyone wishes to visit them for further information.

I Can't Install Microsoft Security Essentials

A direct link to this complete article and links on that page is on the next
line.

*I. Steps to Consider:

Step 1: Remove antivirus or antispyware programs

Step 2: Ensure that the Windows Installer service is running

Step 3: If your computer is running Windows XP SP2, verify that it has the
required prerequisites

MSE installs better when using Windows-xp with Service Pack Three.

Step 4: Make sure you're installing the right version for your operating
system

Step 5: Start Windows in Selective Startup mode

Step 6: Contact customer support

*How to Carry Out the Above Steps:

You might encounter some issues when installing Microsoft Security
Essentials. This is usually because you have some other security program
running or because you're missing some prerequisites. To help with these
issues, follow the instructions below. You'll need to restart your
computer, so please print or emboss this page.

Note

If you can't install Microsoft Security Essentials because you can't even
download it, the first thing to try is your Internet connection (but if you're
viewing this page, that's probably fine). You may also want to try
downloading from Windows Internet Explorer.

*Step 1: Remove antivirus or antispyware programs

1.. Completely uninstall any existing Internet security programs by
following the steps in the topic: How do I uninstall antivirus or
antispyware programs?

Found at the link below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/How-do-I-uninstall-antivirus-or-antispyware-programs

  2.. Restart your computer.

3.. Install Microsoft Security Essentials again. If this doesn't resolve
the issue, continue to the next step.

If you don't have Microsoft Security Essentials yet, visit the link below.

*Step 2: Ensure that the Windows Installer service is running

programs and files box, type services.msc, and then press Enter.

that the service is already started.

3.. On the Services page, on the File menu, press enter on exit or click
Exit.

4.. In Windows 7, Press the start button or click Start. In the Search
programs and files box, type command prompt. Right-click Command Prompt, and

5.. Type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then press Enter.

  Note:

There is no indication that this command has succeeded or failed.

6.. Install Microsoft Security Essentials again. If this doesn't resolve
the issue, continue to the next step.

*Step 3: If your computer is running Windows XP SP2, verify that it has the
required prerequisites
