And what about the Plextalk Pocket. How does that compare recording wise with the DM5 and the Zoom? ----- Original Message ----- From: "G. McFarlane" <gmcf@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Steve
I know I've asked something similar before but I'm still a little unclear.
Wishing to have a good recorder which will give me good radio broadcast quality I would probably go with the H1. However I also need a notetaker and like the extra facilities on the DM5. My main issue is with quality of recording with internal and external mikes. Am I going to get pretty well the same recording quality with both or is there a definite advantage in having one over the other? Could the H1 be used as a notetaker? I mean with speed of recording, not waiting to get started with complex presses. Also on retrieval of messages I like to press the next button and jump through messages. Would the H1 be as flexible as the DM5?
Thanks for any further input you or anyone else can give.

Hi Damon,

It is not so easy to change the recording format by accident, because you
have to move the record format switch first, before it goes into that menu,
and that switch is not one of those that moves easily.

For what it is, the H1 is fantastic, and you will not get a better recorder at the price. Let's see, the H1, is 89.99 pounds, and the DM5 is 250. 'Nuff
said.

All the best

Steve

I heard plenty of hiss in the background on Neal Ewers podcast though. Also,

the auto levels on the zoom H1 are shockingly bad - they take ages to
recover after a loud bang or microphone pop and seemingly, depending on the

ambient noise in the room, I'm not entirely sure it always does recover.

Whereas the autolevels on the Olympus DM5, as demoed by neal Ewers, had
remarkably good autolevels.

And just harping back to the Zoom H1, Neal Ewers warned that you can knock it into a different recording mode, say between 64kbs up to 128kbs quality. That doesn't sound like an accessible recorder to me because there's no way
a blind person can know it's happened until they listen back to the
recording later.

Any thoughts on this and I'd really like to hear.

Hi Will, listen to the Neil Ewers podcast on blind cool tech. He demos it
pretty well.
As far as comparison with the DM5 goes, judging from the demo of it that
Tony posted to the list the recording quality is far superior on the H1.
It all depends on what you want it for. If you want it as a recorder then
the H1. If you want it for listening to daisy books and doing a similar
job to the stream then the DM5. Only you can decide.
                   John.

Hi, I am doing an interpreting course, and I have been told I can record the classes if I wish as it is mainly lecture-based. Is the zoom recorder

good the h1?
Are they as good as the dm5's? I know the h1 has no menu system so how
easy is it to use?
Will
