I dare say I will be shot down in flames here but here goes: 1 I have done this sort of thing many times and it is a double edged sword, you may upgrade to a more up to date O/S but you don't always get a better or more stable O/S at the end of the process. Whilst some carriers do take ages to ratify an O/S for their network there sometimes is a good reason. 2 This process is also rather hazardous and I would be extremely cautious doing this without sighted help because if you have TALKS or another of the screen readers on the phone you will lose it. It is not a process to be taken lightly. 3 It is imperative that you backup every shred of data because you may lose it. 4 If you are attempting to unlock a phone from a particular carrier then this process in my experience does not actually help you do that. With many if not all BB5 style phones the process involves rather more and generally the man down a shop or market can't even unlock it. I know because I have tried. What you do end up with is a relatively clean phone. 5 If you want to unlock the phone to all carriers then usually you have to go back to your carrier who can usually do it at price which is usually way above any costs involved.
