Well thanks for your message, it turned out to be such an easy solution.  I 
plugged in my USB headset, and away I went, as everything working perfectly.

  I agree that Steve could have been a little less patronising, but he does 
have a point you know.  How on earth are you going to get help with this 
problem if you haven't a screen.  Without a screen, no one will know where 
about in the system you are, nobody will be able to tell you where the sliders 
in the volume control are or whether the mute button is checked.  The only 
suggestion I can possibly think of here is if you get yourself something like a 
USB headset which will act as a temporary sound card.  If your computer is 
booting up, the USB sound card will let you here speech so you can get your 
main sound system working again.  Steve's right on the money when he says its a 
false economy so I suggest you also look at getting a cheap LCD screen.  They 
start from under a hundred pounds these days.
