Elanor,

There are occasions when you may not have someone with you who can read the
menu. For example, my partner and I are both blind so in that situation...
As it is, I always ask the waitor or waitress if they'd mind reading it. I
may do it on occasions when I'm with sighted friends simply to demonstrate
it or to show off a little. The issue around this discussion though is not
what we do as a blind person in social settings but more what is possible to
do! Also, I used the concept of using a menu as purely an example. It
could be a time table or a letter or anything else. I also do not have any
problems in listening to someone read a menu or anything else for that
matter if they are able to and don't mind it.

Regards.

Steve

I can't imagine going out for a meal with someone and while they read the
menu, I use KNFB and headphones. Surely discussing what is on the menu can
be social as well. I know we want independence but I have never felt
awkward when someone is reading a menu to me.
