Steve this is true of course when I got my first sighted help yesterday I did not think to tell him to page right for the second option of settings. if I could have seen the screen it says page one of three. I wonder if you can tell me the keyboard layout from top left. I tried to put in my wep key but with no success. do you hold the symbol key down to get the numbers. just to clarify the symbol key is second row second in from the right. if I press shift symbol it turns text to speech on. look forward to your reply.

It's possible, but not straightforward, to turn speech on without sighted assistance - on the Kindle 3, at least. Press the Menu button which is at the top right of the keyboard. What's in the menu can change depending on the situation, but the second from bottom item is Settings, so press DownArrow a dozen or more times to get to the bottom - it doesn't cycle around - and then UpArrow once to settings and press the Enter button. Then press PageDown once and focus should be on the Voice Guide entry, press Enter again to turn it on. You won't get a message to say it's on, but if you wait a couple of seconds and then press a key that changes the focus, like DownArrow, you should get a spoken response. I've played around with my Kindle 3 wifi for a while and haven't come across a situation in which the above didn't work. I'd be interested in hearing other people's experience.
