It's possible, but not straightforward, to turn speech on without
sighted assistance - on the Kindle 3, at least.

Press the Menu button which is at the top right of the keyboard. What's
in the menu can change depending on the situation, but the second from
bottom item is Settings, so press DownArrow a dozen or more times to get
to the bottom - it doesn't cycle around - and then UpArrow once to
settings and press the Enter button. Then press PageDown once and focus
should be on the Voice Guide entry, press Enter again to turn it on.

You won't get a message to say it's on, but if you wait a couple of
seconds and then press a key that changes the focus, like DownArrow, you
should get a spoken response.

I've played around with my Kindle 3 wifi for a while and haven't come
across a situation in which the above didn't work. I'd be interested in
hearing other people's experience.

Steve

John - it's turned off by default, so you will need that sighted help to

turn it on from within settings, but once on, you're good to go.
-----

Remember that you'll have to turn tts on each time you want to read, I
think
the button for this is to the right of the space bar, but not sure if
it's
the first button or not, again, once you have speech turned on, you'll
be
able to figure out the rest -
