Rajmund, those contractions were stopped in the 1970's, though Torch Trust did keep them going for a considerable time after that.

Does anyone remember why they dropped dot 5 g for god, dot 5 c for Christ etc.? It isn't as though they allocated these signs elsewhere.

This is an assumption which is not true. Sighted people involved in the
design of UEB are likely to be also involved in the teaching of Braille. It
may not be perfect, but it does introduce some degree of logicality to a
system which in its contracted form has grown up in a rather random fashion.
The quirks of Braille are familiar to me as I have grown to them from the
age of 5. I don't think it would have been quite as easy if I had been
learning from age 50.

Why are sighted people designing a new braille code at all? They won't use
it.
