About mobile messaging
You can use MSN Messenger to send an instant message to a mobile device.

Mobile contacts
A mobile contact is someone who can send and receive instant messages on a
mobile device. Most wireless service providers and devices use SMS (Short
Message Service. A form of mobile messaging where each message may not
exceed 70 to 140 characters, with no emoticons or display pictures.) as
their standard for instant messaging. Some wireless service providers also
allow enhanced mobile messaging, which offers more options and features. You
can send mobile contacts a mobile message the same way you send an instant
message.

Contacts with a mobile status have a yellow contact icon next to their
names. However, some mobile contacts may appear as a green contact icon
when their mobile device is online, or as a red contact icon when their
mobile device is offline.

Buy mobile messages
Depending on your country or region, you may be required to purchase mobile
messages to send instant messages to mobile devices. Mobile messages are
credits for instant messages sent to mobile devices, and are purchased in
bundles. MSN Messenger notifies you when you have no credits remaining. For
more information about purchasing mobile messages, go to the MSN Premium
Services website.

Enhanced mobile messaging
Enhanced mobile messaging allows you to use two-way text communication with
a mobile device. And, unlike SMS messaging, enhanced mobile messaging allows
the mobile subscriber to initiate an instant message. Other advanced
features may also be available, such as emoticons (A small image that can be
inserted into a message to represent a certain mood or attitude. ) , winks
(An animated greeting that you can send to your contacts.) , nudges (A
visual and audible signal that attracts the attention of other people in
your conversation.) , display pictures (An image associated with your
display name that helps others recognize you. It appears in the main
Messenger window, and in all conversation windows. ) , and longer text
messages. These enhanced features may not be available in all regions, and
vary depending on the wireless service provider and device.

Notes

If you send a message to a mobile device that is offline, it will be
delivered the next time that device is online. However, this feature may not
be available for all mobile devices.
Contacts who receive instant messages on their mobile devices may be
required to pay a fee, depending on their wireless service provider.
Tip

You can add a call-back number to your mobile messages so your contacts know
where to reach you.
