Hi,

They're called emoticons.  As far as I know if you want to insert one
into an e-mail you have to write them out manually as in colon dash
rightparen for smiley face.  But I use webmail and haven't used a mail
client for yonks, so maybe there are clients that give you a list you
can insert from...

Here's a list of commonly used emoticons together with their meanings:
