Subject: [access-uk] sub-titling and the new Portset device
Hi. Very briefly folks, this new subject of mine is posing the question, if
Portset have managed largely to solve the problem of access to electronic
text with Freeview transmissions, then what chance it can handle subtitles
on screen, or provided for the deaf?
If this is doable, then could it be one way, in the not too distant future,
that unspoken sub-titles could be tackled?
I should say its not a solution that appeals to me greatly as none of us is
likely to equip ourselves with such a device quickly. I think much more
should be done at the broadcasters' end of things. I feel simillarly about
things like ITunes, where Apple doesn't seem to be at all willing to make
necessary adjustments on its side, leaving it to the scripting wizzardry of
Brian Hartgen, which seems like a cop-out on Apples' part.
Forgive me for making that parallel, but I am firmly on the side of
technical and software solutions on the prvider isde, not exspensive work
arounds and cludges after the event.
