Thanks David, very useful to know. I am assuming then that you use it in
conjunction with a data plan you have with your mobile network provider?
Kind regards,

I have a TP Link as well though probably not as smart a model as Steve is
likely to have. Mine cost about £75 on Amazon. I have found it extraordinarily
useful over the time I have had it. Far more useful than I anticipated. I
have used it as a replacement Wi-Fi in cottages without this connection .
If Virgin internet go down for any reason this is a nuisance but not a disaster
as I again just turn to my TP Link.
and it provides more rapid connection to the Internet whilst out and about with
my aged iPhone SE.
Another unanticipated use is that it turns devices like Victor Readers or Evo
10 into mobile internet devices.
Before the lockdown I was routinely using the convenience of Internet Radio on
these devices whilst I was out and about without being tied to a home Wi-Fi
system. I know I could fumble about and swipe forever for this with my Phone
but I am a dinosaur who prefers buttons for my radio convenience so this suits
me perfectly.

Hi Jackie,
It's a TP Link. I'll log into it tomorrow and get you the model number. As
you can imagine, I haven't used it since lockdown, because we haven't been
travelling, so I may have to charge its battery a bit first.
It's great though, because it is faster than using most phones as hotspots.
Just hook to it, and don't use your phone as a hotspot and it flies.
All the best
Steve

Hi Steve
I would imagine it's probably more secure than some of the hotel/public Wi-Fi
spots? What is your SIM router called if you don't mind me asking?
Kind regards,

Hi,
I rarely use Wi-Fi now when I'm out, even at hotels, because it usually is so
slow. I have a 100GB per month data package, and just have a little Sim card
router that provides Wi-Fi to all my devices.
All the best

We've all been there, Barrie! (smile).
When we went on our cruise last year the ship's wi-fi was horrendously
expensive and it made me smile that when passengers got off the boat they all
raced to the nearest café which offered free wi-fi!

This describes my holiday home experience exactly. When I go up in the attic
to make a call, all the text messages also come through.

This might, in fact, Barrie, be the simplest solution as I do want her to have
some access to texts and calls, but not in the apartment where she is being
forced to spend her half term holiday. I thought I was going to have to use the
idea of an old Nokia phone with Talks, but this might work better. Thanks.

One idea that could restrict your imaginary girl is that she could be in an
area were she has no or very limited signal. The holiday home I go to most
years is a time warp village and the only place I can get a phone signal is up
in a corner of the attic, and that is intermittent. Using data is nigh
impossible.

Not all packages come with adata allowance or much of one so you could run out
easily. Also, finance could be an issue to prevent the services from working
due to lack of data.

Hi Alison
Why not make her phone spontaneously combust, just overheat and explode
Sometimes I wish my phone would do that because I’m hooked on the bloody
thing all day and half the night!

Yes, she would be able to access all those services with just data.

I belong to a creative writing group and am trying to write a
story where a youngster is in a house without wi-fi. Would she be
able to access the following:
Spotify?
e-mails?
Radio stations?
YouTube?
Netflix?
I guess we should presume she has a data package. But I know that
when my wi-fi is down, there are some services I can’t reach, like
Seven Little Words.
