Hi,

Not a silly question at all.  No, Java is not essential to the running of
the PC itself.  But if you have programs written in Java, they will need the
Java Runtime Environment installed.  If you've never had issues running
programs before, or never been prompted to install it before, chances are
you can safely remove it.

Note: Some websites require a slimmed down version of the Java Runtime
Environment to be installed.  Examples are some online trading sites with
real-time platforms, etc.  You'll be prompted if you visit one of these
sites and the Java components are needed, so don't worry about it until
then.

Keep getting prompts to update java, I'm assuming java is essential to the
running of the pc? if not can I safely uninstall it?
