Just to back Barry up. It does work, I followed this guide and I have
email in outlook express fine. You absolutely do need to add all those
numeric parameters to the advanced tab in OE else it just won't work if
that's at all helpful.

Why not try google's guide on setting IMAP up in outlook?
NB. Pay close attention to enabling IMAP on your gmail account, by
default it's not allowed for security.

incoming server: pop.googlemail.com
outgoing server: smtp.googlemail.com,
user name: ,
password:
server requires authentification (this must be checked), use same
settings as my incoming server, port numbers:
incoming server: 995, this server requires an incrpted ssl (this must be
checked), outgoing server smtp 465 this server requires an incripted ssl
connection (again this must be checked).
for imap the incoming servers are different,
servers: imap.googlemail.com
port number: 993.
