or you can do it in internet explorer in the programs tab or you can in 
Internet Explorer version 6 anyway. internet options in control pannel will 
also do.

Alexander, I have not been following this thread carefully, so I apologise 
if
the following is not relevant.

Have you looked in the Set Program access and defaults in the Start
Menu?    It is not one of the easiest to handle with a screen reader but 
that
is where I would go to change default browser or e-mail client.
