Oh well thanks Steve. I was not aware of that until now. What a pity. Shame so
much software going to waste and so many who could benefit from it.

Hi Eleanor,

Even passing it onto a charity could be costly. You've still got to transfer
the licence, or they have.

All the best

How many people who sell on Jaws or other screen reader software purchased out
of their own money? Many people using this very expensive software have it
purchased at the expense of the tax payer. I know I have and for this reason
would never sell any of it on. If I had any assistive technology which would
benefit someone and I had no further use for it, I would pass it on to a
charity that might be able to use it.

I understand that there should be an admin cost to transfer the licence,
and it is necessary to transfer the licence to give the new owner the proper
support. Still, £75 does seem rather expensive to cover such admin costs.

What I do object to is having to update the licence to the current version,
and I don't believe that Tristren's argument holds water. What is the
difference between me having an older version and not updating, and me
passing that older version on to another person? It is just a scam to
squeeze more money out of disabled people.

However, rather than FS's practice making them money, I would argue that it
is counter-productive. With such a penalty on selling on licences, how many
people will do it legitimately? I imagine that it's very few. Also,
knowing that FS have a punitive practice is not good advertising. Is it a
wonder that they are losing their market share? In a recent survey, they
are down from something like 80% of the market at their height to 52% now.

Jaws is good and I do appreciate the research and development, but do we
need the R&D to be giving us bloatware with bells and whistles, or do we
just need it to just work with current applications?

I would have thought that less irrelevant R&D that seems only there to
justify the cost of upgrades, less punitive practices, and lower prices,
then Jaws might stay market leader for a long time to come.

Right, I'll come down off my soap box now.

Cheers

Barry

Hi Derek

If you have a copy of a software licence, and remember it's only a licence
of that software, you don't own it, you have to notify the vendor to keep it
above board. I'm not in any way against notifying the relevant parties, and
ensuring the recipient's name and correct number of keys are accounted for.
But I would strongly object to paying £75 for the privilege, in addition to
having to update to the latest version first, that's just milking it. But
it's just my take on it, some will agree, and others won't.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Jackie
Sorry to ask silly question but why would anyone want to sell ownership of
a licence for jaws.

I mean, if say you sold me your computer, surely that Also means I Get
whatever software you have left on it Such as windows any whatever screen
reader you had on it.

Regards, Derek
