Carol, I'm not too sure about DELL laptops.
My desktop is a DELL Demension 2400. I haven't had any major problems with
the system as such, but they are not the best.
You are also quite correct mentioning the cost of the Laptop.
But I use a company called Ebuyer.com, and they are quite reasonably priced,
infact cheap with all computer equipment etc.

I have a Dell. I needed something very lightweight, but that pushed up the
price quite considerably. Very pleased ... but wouldn't recommend it if
you're on a tight budget.

I had a bad moment (about an hour) this afternoon when my faithfully,
well-behaved laptop suddenly didn't speak. I'd forgotten that I sent it
to hybernate if not used for half an hour and there I was chatting on
the phone, so no speech when I returned. I'd been too far away from the
laptop to hear anything much ... and then I couldn't get it going again
... but eventually got there. I did wonder though if I'd been smitten!

So what does this virus do and how do you know whether your system
has been affected at all?
After all, Jaws crashes reasonably often ... but that doesn't mean
it's been hacked into!

Catherine, that was also my take on it, but I wouldn't dismiss it
just like that.
The people on the board were still worried about the threat.
Some of them were still having problems with this long after the
time.
Many of them had to format their systems.
It is widely thought, that Tyler Spy is behind it.
He was recently barred from one of the mailing lists I am
subscribed to for doing similar things.
As I say, there is probably nothing to worry about, but who really
knows,

I didn't read all the responses, and maybe it's a hoax anyway, but
from what I read this virus was set to go off on 26 Dec and is
only present if you run a crack of JAWS8, so hopefully if I read
it correctly most people won't have a problem...
