Thanks Steve, I can see how the prog would be useful for a new user but also how they'll out grow it fairly quickly.

You are correct, you can't. You have to use the applications that are part 
of Guide, and that's all.

ok, do I take it that you can't use the prog to access the usual windows
applications? internet explorer, outlook express, office and so on?

We ought to be clear on one thing though.  It is not a screen reader at
all.
Rather it is a suite of self-voicing applications. There is a difference.
