Graham, regarding the Opticbook, can you set it up to do photocopying? With my Epson 1240, I have a really nifty facility that lets me press one of the buttons on the front and it photocopies documents, which is really handier than trying to get someone to copy them for you. If I ever had to upgrade my scanner, it would be a feature I would hate to lose. But I like the sound of the book edge facility on the Opticbook.

all will work well and the laptop should be fine I think. The Cannon LIDE range of scanners are perhaps a little slow but they are better than nothing. If you are going to be scanning books then a bookedge scannerwould be appropriate. The only one I know of that is reasonably affordableis the Plustek Optibook 3600. This has a scanner glass that extends past the front edge of the scanner. it slopes down at an angle of 45 degrees orsomething like that, could be 30 degrees i'm really not sure what the angle is. Anyway it allows text in the margin of a book to be read without havingto break the spine in order to read it.OpenBook has not been developed for a while but there is a latest version,version 8 about to be released.
