Hi Jackie - I bought in 2003, and have had this problem of inaccurate disc reading ever since I had it really. At the time when this kind of thing was a discussion thread on these forums, most people were saying it was all down to the brand of disk, but my experience was that a disc would start recording, but then after a while give me that awful "incompatible or damaged disk" message, even though I'd already managed to start a recording. Eventually I got so fed up with it that I contacted the RNIB and at a cost of £20 to myself, sent it back, only to have it returned, saying they had looked at it, and tried it with several disks, and were unable to replicate my experience with it. The final straw was when I actually bought a DAISY title from them, only to find it wouldn't play in my machine. They offered to replace the disk twice, but still no improvement. Since then, it's been pretty redundant given that I can't trust it to continue recording once it has started. It was ok with the card reader, it was the disk drive that was clearly the problem in my mind, but the RNIB offered me nothing more. By this time, the machine was about 4 years old, but still little used.

It's because of this experience and what others have shared that I feel we are let down by an organisation that is supposed to be representing our interests. Such a great shame that it's equipment is so often poor in design, and proem to fail, and oh yes, often very expensive, like the PTR1, £600 8 years ago!! -

Hi Andy

This is not good enough, and you should let your feelings be known to the
hierarchy at RNIB if you feel you have a case. When did you buy it?

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Yes, this is the problem. When I sent my Ptr1 back for a repair because it
wouldn't play certain discs, including a daisy book bought from them, they
sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it! Nowhere else to go
unfortunately. My player is just sat in a drawer now! -

Hi Hazel.

RNIB are the only people in the UK who service this machine I
believe, they're the main distributor for Plextalk products in this country
as well. I believe Plextalk may have a european operation but I haven't
checked this, if so you could approach them, otherwise its the japanese
company who make the product.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hello to all
Is there anyone out there who could give us the name and number of a
company who could repair our P T N 1 Daisy book reader ?
R N I B repaired it about 18 months ago and made a complete pigs ear
on the job, so for this reason we will not go back to them.
We have contacted Force 10, Human wareand sight and sound but they
couldn't help, so I am asking all listers.
Thanks in advance.
Hazel & Kim
