Hi Alfred.

Oh, don't get me started LOLOL, I used to buy books on tape because the CD's though available were so darned expensive. Even with new books just out the box, especially with the unabridged ones on more than a handful of cassettes, the quality of cassettes was never guaranteed. Sometimes I'd have severe difficulties hearing the narrator because the sound quality was so bad, either muffled or sounding like the narrator was reading through a funnel.

All the best, Ibrahim.

You remind me Ibrahim of the hours spent winding the reams of tape with a
pencil Lol!

Hi Mike.

What is making audio books more mainstream I would argue is their coming of age where delivery and production is concerned. Sites like Audible, Audioville and audiogo let you download books to your favourite portable reading device whether that is an IPod or specialist player. When they used to be provided on cassette or CD, not only were there fewer selections of titles to be had, but the production, warehousing and distribution costs were significantly higher. The fact that you can now hold a hundred audio books in the palm of your hand is a big draw and of course you can do other things like exercising, driving, doing the ironing etc. and still enjoy a thriller or what have you without the need to continually switch tapes or discs, not to mention that digital copies never fade or fail you unlike dreaded tapes.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Adrien

The publishers would probably argue that the production costs of an audio
book justify the cost differential and that the audio book is aimed at
mainstream audiences as much as the VI market.

Inclusion of audio titles in such literary programmes as 'A Good Read' on
Radio 4 would seem to suggest an increasing popularity of audio books.

Subject: [access-uk] question about books

Hi

Nnot sure if this is ok here but I am not on vi gen so I
only want to know something. I have been looking at a book
about a blind woman who travelled the world on her husband's
motor bike, anyway the print is £12.99 or £9 but the audio
version is £28, is that not a huge difference, are they
allowed to charge so much more? What happened to the right
to read campaign? The book is called touching the world and
the author is Cathy Birchall and Bernard Smith. I just think
that is a bit over the top. Sorry if this is way off topic
but wasn't sure if it was allowed here.

Adrien
