Hi Ibrahim,

You may need sighted help, but it might be an idea to try running the
tests in Safe Mode if you can, where only a limited set of drivers,
etc., would be loaded. If you then see a significant improvement, at
least you'll have somewhere to start from.

George.

Hi George.

Well, thanks for your input. I did exactly as you suggested, indeed
I'm using Auslogics BoostSpeed which is a reasonably good and highly
accessible optimisation and performance management suite. Alas, I use
Mcafee, but my experience with it is so far good and running a PC
Pitstop test on my netbook yielded much better results, though the
software installed is more or less the same as the software on my
laptop machine with only a few minor issues. Even the external drive
ran much faster, to the order of around 3 times as fast. I also
copied a large file to the drive on both machines, exactly the same
file took twice as long to copy on my laptop compared to my netbook.

All the best, Ibrahim.

        Hi Ibrahim,

Having looked at the Compel specs, and PCPitStop, I wonder if
the latter have played down the results in an effort to persuade you
to buy PC Optimize product?

That said, if you have noticed a serious degrading of
performance, the question is how to track down what is causing it. I
guess it pretty much goes without saying that you've done all the
usual things such as clearing temp files and temporary internet files,
defragging and such like.

What sort of Processes are running and taking up processor
time? Many of today's anti-virus programs seem to be hogging system
power these days - indeed I've just ditched McAfee for that very
reason.

        All the best,

        George,

        Hi George.

Its a custom built machine, but the white box brand is Compal
and the model number FL90. You should be able to find the specs for
the case on the Compal website, but if you can't I'll happily drag up
my invoice with the spec on for you to take a look at.

        All the best, Ibrahim.

What is the make and model of your laptop?

                George.

sluggish video, memory and disk performance

                Hi Everyone.

Its unusual for me to write to any list with a
technical problem *smile*, but I can't figure out what is happening
here so would appreciate some assistance.

I recently started experiencing sluggish performance
of my main laptop pc. The general spec is a 2.4GHZ dual core
processor, 2GB memory, Nvidia 512MB dedicated graphics chip and
Windows XP professional edition. The laptop has a 250GB SATA 5400RPM
hard drive and when doing the tests I had my Freecom XXS drive
connected which has 320GB with the same rotational speed. I ran a
series of performance tests at www.pcpitstop.com which reported that
2D and 3D graphics were poor, but most alarmingly, the memory
performance of this machine was only around the 400MB mark, yet i have
1066MHZ memory in this machine. Also, disk performance was poor, with
my freecom drive only read/write data speed at 9MB whilst the system
disk managed 33MB. If anyone has any suggestions as to what may be
causing these issues, some ideas would be much appreciated.

                All the best, Ibrahim.
