Joe,

I would do this in the same manner and not even bother to export to text,
unless of course I was not going to be able to read them using Outlook
Express.

Alex, as long as you are using Outlook Express, try this:

Whenever you feel like emptying those mail folders and saving their
contents:

1) Locate the folder where your .MBX files are stored. (This will be
found by looking in Tools, Options and going to the Maintenance Tab.

2) Make a folder which gives the indication that it's Mail backups and a
date somewhere else - on another hard drive if you wish.

3) Copy all those .MBX files.

Now you can either delete the mail folders completely, or just the messages
within them.

Remember to backup again before too long, using another folder with a date.

Works for me and I don't find it time-consuming!
