Thanks for that.  Alt F4 isn't actually doing anything at present.  It isn't 
even shutting a program.

  Mark, press the control key plus the escape key, then the letter u, then the 
letter u again, and the computer should shut down. All Alt f4 will do is to 
shut down a window.

    I have a new laptop and have not found the command to switch off the laptop 
    properly.  I have been using shift f4 but this doesn't work.  The machine 
is 
    an asus (I think) and I am using supernova screenreader.
