Hmm, I wonder if you can get good external batteries for phones like you can
for laptops? It would at least allow you to get a whole night's use out of
it with the radio. I can just about get four hours at the moment via GPRS.
It's barely two for WiFi. Not complaining, just trying to think outside the
box.

And I'd rather skip the trailing cables for AC adapters, although I did
think of that.

True, and of course as it's WiFi there's nothing to stop it being
programmable via a web interface just like any other network device from any
computer. So you have the portability of the radio, accessibility of a TTS
and expandibility of the web interface as well.

Hi Hussein

What we really need is a radio with built-in TTS. That way, whenever a
station becomes available or changes its name, the TTS will inform, as
opposed to using a tagging system that pre-programs in the station. The
Sonus was a good radio, but this feature of tagging let it down, as with the
Netgem Freeview box.

I would personally love a standard Internet radio that we weren't going to
pay the earth for, which would allow me to navigate the thousands of
stations out there using a simplistic menu structure and TTS engine.

Hi,

Not a radio but if you have a phone with WiFi, you could use www.moodio.fm
to do the same. Of course you're not going to get the same battery life out
of a phone as with a dedicated radio, due to it doing lots of other
functions as well, but it's a start.

It would be interesting to know what the production costs would be and
potential uptake of a small device that essentially has an OS on board
(maybe a derivative of Linux) with a light screen reader that could be used
to navigate any menus. I'm thinking along the lines of the Nokia N900 but
without the phone, etc. Or maybe that's just a crazy idea and we should
return to regular programming?

Hi Jackie. Thanks for your response.

The reason I ask is because I have seen that one of the big manufactureres,
I think it was Pure, seem to have a web portal that you become a subscriber
to. I gathered the idea was that you setup all your radio stations on the
web then somehow, using wifi magic, your station list jumps onto your wifi
portable digital radio in the kitchen or by your bedside. And I was kinda
hoping that they might be automatically assigned with physical keys at that
stage.

Have you looked at anything like this? Perhaps the accompanying web portal
doesn't do quite what I want it to?

I guess that the wep key would have to be input by a sightie come what may
but, using the web as a control panel, you could load up the radio with your

fave stations easily if someone had the nouse to do this.
