Hi,

I also believe in most circumstances the background traffic of various pings,
port scans etc from various sources will keep most connections up. When I
configured my router a few months ago, I didn't realise that I had it in
autodisconnect mode if it was idle for 5 minutes. It never disconnected in
over 3 months, and over night I really didn't have much running.

However, I set up a friend with Plusnet and they are complaining to me that
their system is not going through sometimes. The router logs are showing
several periods of disconnection, I told them if it continues to ring them up,
but am probably going to find an alternative ISP to recommend home users go
with, this user had already a dialup with them so it was easier to migrate to
the broadband offering and keep the email address.

Andrew.

Hi Kevin,

There's a simple solution to this. Just leave your Email program open and
checking for mail every minute. If you do that, it will kick the connection
and keep it alive.

All the best

hi all, several months back plus net said they were going to start dropping
connections of users who weren't actually using the connection. kind of like
the old dial-up thing were if you left your connection unused for a period
of time, the connection was dropped and you had to reconnect. this is what
they are doing. if you leave your pc connected to the internet, but not
actually actively using it, plus net will disconnect you. i read the article
some while back on adslguide.org.
